Early Awards Season Nominees (Independent Spirit Awards)
Nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards came out this week. That’s the awards show that celebrates movies that were produced without studio interference, the one that takes place the Saturday before the Sunday of the Oscars. It generally airs on TV a few weeks later, looking incredibly low-rent like it’s being held in someone’s basement, with everyone in casual clothes and inexplicably, a lot of singing. This is where the awards go to your Preciouses, your Lost in Translations, your In the Bedrooms, your You Can Count on Mes.
Anyway, I’ve already crossed off Take Shelter and Martha Marcy May Marlene, which did exceedingly well in nominations. Also getting some significant attention are Beginners, Margin Call, The Descendants, and The Artist. Which were all on my list already, minus Beginners, which I thought got middling reviews. But the trailer was funny, so I’ll see it.
Also, a nomination for My Week With Marilyn–which I am not much interested in at all, because I think the goddessification of Marilyn Monroe is played out, however finely Michelle Williams performs the role–and multiple nominations for this fall’s mid-level actioner Drive. What’s up with that? Is it the Ryan Gosling effect, or was that actually a good movie?
Complete nominations are here, for interested parties.
